    Abstract

The main aim of this study was to evaluate the patterns of use and the cost of antipsychotic and other medications used in treating hospitalized psychiatric patients. In the retrospective cohort of patients analysed in this study, the most common diagnosis was schizophrenia and the use of atypical antipsychotics was more than tenfold that of typical drugs. Schizophrenic patients had the highest mean cost per patient, largely because of their longer length of stays.
