dc.description.abstract

People with intellectual disability experience a high risk of maltreatment by family members which can have significant and enduring effects on victim-survivors. Understanding perceptions of this is important because they are highly influential. This thesis summarised recent literature, investigated Australian news representations, examined public perceptions, and explored the perspective of people with intellectual disability on this important social issue. Two people with intellectual disability guided the work to ensure that it served those so labelled.
