This chapter explores the way in which the series Fringe portrays the presence of difference between versions of the same person existing in multiple worlds. Fringe offers a unique opportunity to consider in detail the question of interpersonal communication and what might be termed ‘experiential’ otherness, for example, by comparing interactions with Olivia against those with Alt-Olivia, and interactions with Walter and against those with Walternate, etc. The chapter is therefore able to analyse the series’ portrayal of the otherness that results between people that are ostensibly the ‘same’, while also being different from each other, in terms of their emotional, intellectual and physical skills, because of their particular life experiences and sociocultural positioning. | |
