dc.description.abstract

The holographic antenna approach is adapted for operation in the microstrip regime to re-radiate the surface wave (SW) excited by the patch antenna. This paper discusses the design of the holographic surface, as well as its integration with the microstrip patch. The initial design concept was developed by assuming small perturbation to the SW, which was subsequently verified through full-wave Method-of-Moments (MoM) simulations. While this method is simple and intuitive, it will be shown that significant improvement to the broadside gain and SW efficiency of the microstrip patch can be achieved at the cost of increased area.
