    Abstract

This cross-national study involved comparing mathematics classes in the USA and Hong Kong in terms of classroom learning environment, attitudes toward mathematics, and academic efficacy for a sample of 1,309 seventh and eighth students. Data analyses supported the factorial validity and reliability of the questionnaires and revealed that students in Hong Kong, relative to American students, perceived their classroom environments as less favourable but enjoyed mathematics learning more.
