Towards electrode immersion control on lonmin's no 1 circular furnace
MetadataShow full item record
A control philosophy to be applied by Lonmin to maintain constant electrode immersion in their no. 1 circular smelting furnace is put forward. This control philosophy is facilitated though a combinationof thermodynamic models used to predict the slag composition and empirical correlations to estimate the furnace geometric factor as well as the slag conductivity. The model can determine theoperating resistance setpoint required in order to maintain a desired electrode immersion as a function of the feeds to the furnace, slag level and temperature. If modifying the resistance setpoint cannotmaintain the desired immersion without moving out of the furnace P-V-I operating envelope, the model can be used to determine the amount of slag modifiers (silica or lime) required to shift the slagchemistry back into a region where the immersion can be controlled though resistance setpoint manipulation.

Investigating the effect of slag bath conditions on the existence of multiphase emulsion zones in PGM smelting furnaces using computational fluid dynamicsEksteen, Jacques; Ritchie S. (2011)The presence of chrome in electric arc furnaces smelting platinum group metals (PGM’s) has a number of potentially negative consequences. In cases where the slag chrome content is above the saturation limit the existence ...
Computational fluid dynamic modelling of an electric furnace used in the smelting of PGM containing concentratesBezuidenhout, J.; Eksteen, Jacques; Bradshaw, S. (2009)A complete three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic model has been developed to investigate the internal dynamics of a circular, three-phase electrical furnace as used for the smelting of Platinum Group Metal (PGM) ...
Cracking a hard nut: An overview of Lonmin’s operations directed at smelting of UG2-rich concentrate blendsEksteen, Jacques; Van Beek, B.; Bezuidenhout, G. (2011)Lonmin, earlier than any other primary platinum producer, had to deal with the concentrating and smelting of UG2-rich ores and concentrates respectively. Smelting was performed at a fairly modest scale compared to the ...
