Abstract
A series of field experiments and observations using ants are described which may be performed in high schools by students undertaking special projects or class practical sessions. They are specifically designed for Western Australian conditions but most exercises could be adapted for use elsewhere in Australia. The exercises illustrate the following subject areas: classification and naming of species, invertebrate sampling techniques, distribution of animals, co-existence of animals, animal feeding habits, daily and seasonal activity patterns, animal habitat preferences, plant - animal interactions and the influence of habitat modification on animals.
