    Abstract

Shaun Gladwell is one of Australia’s most internationally acclaimed contemporary artists, recently directing on The Turning (2013), a feature film anthology of Tim Winton short stories, and representing Australia at the Venice Biennale (2009). In 2009, Gladwell travelled to Afghanistan as an Official War Artist and guest of the Australian Defence Force. From that trip to the frontlines, he produced a series of works for the Australian War Memorial, as well as other works related to the experience of Afghanistan. On 11 April 2014, I was part of a panel discussion with Shaun Gladwell and Associate Professor Jennifer Rutherford, Deputy Director of the Hawke Research Institute, at the Anne and Gordon Samstag Museum of Art, Adelaide. This event was presented by the Hawke Research Institute and the Anne and Gordon Samstag Museum of Art. This is Part 1 of a two-part recording of that discussion.
