This thesis details novel analysis methods that were applied to investigate shale and clay mineral reactivity as they come in contact with water-based drilling fluids. Six commercial additives were tested and their shale stabilizing potential was investigated through the use of two advanced particle analyzers – FBRM M500 and Malvern Mastersizer 3000. The experimental study and subsequent results indicate that these novel tools can indeed be used to analyze shale hydration and dispersion through particle analysis. | en_US |
