Building a Repository Metrics Program to Enhance the Value of Library Services

Abstract

Core to the values of librarianship and information science, and also the vision of instructional repositories, is the concept of service. A repository is not just a system, but a suite of services. Building a repository system (or buying a repository package from one of the many repository vendors), adding content, and the letting that content sit untouched or evaluated, is not fully embodying the idea of service created for an institution and its mission. Creating a repository metrics program allows for better understanding of how repository content is used by online audiences and can be the starting point for discussing the impact and reach of an institution’s online content. This article outlines basics steps to starting and maintaining such a program.
