dc.description.abstract

This thesis is concerned with the use of computational optimal control methods to determine optimal strategies for operating raceway ponds in order to maximise the lipid yield of microalgae grown therein. Currently the cost of producing lipids via microalgae is not competitive with that of crude oil. We explore a variety of strategies by which lipid yield may be improved in order to get a better understanding of the ultimate potential of this technology.
